Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly referred to as IBS is a widespread and chronic gastrointestinal disorder.  It is a distressing condition and although not dangerous, can be debilitating.  IBS is a functional disorder which means that whilst there is no abnormality in the structure of the gut the function of the gut is abnormal.  This can be extremely frustrating for sufferers.  Not only do suffers have to tolerate the symptoms of the disorder but also, due to the inability of doctors to locate any physical indicators of IBS those diagnosed often worry that their symptoms are indicative of a more serious medical condition.
